The Unexpected Twist on the Internet's Most Debated Question starts here.
Spend any time on social media, and you'll be no stranger to the Man vs. Bear argument. In April of 2024 a post exploded on TikTok. In this clip the interviewer posed the question to women, "Would you rather be stuck in a forest with a man or a bear?" Seven out of eight women chose the bear. The clip went viral and quickly caught the attention of millions.
This question was certainly out-of-the-box but hit a mutual chord with women internationally who agreed that they would choose the bear over the man. On the other side of the argument, the majority of men were outraged at the response and failed to see how this choice could be justified, insulted that a woman would view a man as more dangerous than an apex predator.
What many men fail to see is that women have been conditioned, not by feminism or misandry, but what can be described as a lifetime of survival training. Our entire lives we have been on high alert against the predator that we fear and encounter most-- men. And not all men, but enough men that we are aware of the ever present danger that they potentially present.
From the time we're old enough to be away from our parents we are taught skills that most of the opposite gender has gone a lifetime without thinking about on a daily basis. Carry your keys between your middle and ring fingers, keep a pen in your pocket, and your finger on the panic button of the key fob. Park close to the store in the light, not next to tall vehicles, and look in your backseat before you open your car door. If your tire is flat run back inside and call for help, don't allow anyone in the parking lot to assist. Always have a buddy when somewhere unfamiliar. Cover your drinks in public. Check behind doors before using the women's restroom. When you go on a date, text your location as well as the name, description, make and model of your date's vehicle to a friend. These are just a few obvious ones that we think about each day.
The argument posed also highlighted the #metoo movement, which although does not discriminate based on gender, is a familiar call to unity among sexual assault victims. Once again, this hashtag became a glaring beacon of solidarity and reflected the hard reality that most women experience. A sentiment that I, myself, have posted and live with the scars of every day.
What some don't realize is that we don't choose the bear because we label all men as rapists and abusers. But we are ever conscious of the potential dangers possible. We know that men who rape don't do so out of instinct or to protect their own, but out of a sadistic hunger and complete lack of sanctity for those they victimize. Their actions aren't born out of survival, but selfishness and evil.
Perhaps the only way that this message will resound with those who are not accustomed to being prey is to change their perception. There are groups of people in all walks of life who have walked a reality that others can not fathom. In all fairness, a US citizen does not know the disparity of an immigrant facing deportation or a refugee living in a war-torn country under a violent dictatorship. In these instances, and many others, our initial reaction should not be to jump to defending a reality we don't understand. Our human instinct should be to empathize and see the world through their eyes.
The Clown or the Bear Unisex Tee was created to explore perspective through symbolism. Perhaps the reality of meeting a clown in the woods seems a ridiculous one. By replacing one element of a familiar thought experiment with something many people instinctively find unsettling, the design encourages viewers to reflect on how uncertainty and instinct influence everyday decisions.
The artwork features a solitary clown standing in a fog-covered forest beneath the question, "Would you choose the clown or the bear?" Below the illustration, the message reads, "If you chose to walk the other way, then you understand why we chose the bear."
